CASE STUDY
The National Library of Israel – Audio item page
Platform for displaying audio files from the catalog

OVERVIEW
The project “Audio Item Page” was initiated as the first step of a broader plan to improve the “Music World” of the Library, bringing all external domains together and improving how users access audio materials.

EXTERNAL DOMAIN – SOME OF THE NATIONAL LIBRARY PARTNERS IN THE CURATION AND COLLECTION OF MUSIC CONTENT.
Goals
Merge domains – all audio entities in the Library’s music collection will be displayed on using united Audio Item Page template.
Improve access – resolving current problems:
-
Hierarchy
-
Having trouble viewing detailed item information (catalog) and it’s rich context at the same time (other items)
-
No focus on listening experience
-
Display album covers
Rethinking the Hierarchy
Before our work the music items were displayed one-by-one, in a flat hierarchy in catalog.

THE OLD FLAT HIERARCHY IN CATALOG – MUSIC ITEMS WERE DISPLAYED ONE-BY-ONE
The new item page layout introduces an item as a part of an album/playlist and displays it within its’ ecosystem providing holistic listening experience

NEW DESIGN GUIDELINES:
🎯 ECOSYSTEM
The new item page layout introduces an item as a part of an album/playlist and displays it within its’ ecosystem and provides holistic listening experience.

AN ECOSYSTEM OF AUDIO ITEMS PROVIDES A HOLISTIC LISTENING EXPERIENCE
The page is dynamic – all pieces of data connected to the item (lyrics, description, authors, covers, etc.) are being pulled on demand when clicking on specific track
🎯 DETAILED DATA
The page is dynamic – all pieces of data connected to the item (lyrics, description, authors, covers, etc.) are being pulled on demand when clicking on specific track

ENRICHING THE ITEM WITH ADDITIONAL DATA BASED ON ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FROM THE CATALOG

ENHANCING THE HEARING EXPERIENCE WITH COMPLEMENTARY COMPONENTS
🎯 DYNAMIC LAYOUT
Page layout is also responsive to file type – between traditional and commercial music

RESPONSIVE LAYOUT BASED ON CONTENT TYPE (TRADITIONAL OR COMMERCIAL MUSIC)
🎯 MOBILE ״FRIENDLY״
Displays playlist in an expandable accordion for the additional data (such as song lyrics) to be closer to the top and not buried somewhere deep below

MOBILE VERSION – EXPANDABLE PLAYLIST
FINAL VERSION
The page that was ultimately designed was aligned with the guidelines we established at the beginning of the work process and answered all the pain points that arose during the preliminary research.
The page created a holistic environment for the variety of audio materials available in the library catalog.
After the release, we received a lot of positive feedback, both from our users and inside the organization.
